New this year!
Join Glade Road Growing and the Town of Blacksburg’s Office of Sustainability for this unforgettable outdoor family activity.

Did you know that garlic mustard is rapidly spreading through Heritage Park? This invasive plant is fast outcompeting native flowers, grasses, and shrubs that wildlife depend on for survival. Native biodiversity in Blacksburg’s natural landscapes are at stake!

Did you also know that garlic mustard is both tasty, packed with nutrients and completely edible? Yes, you can eat it!

Here’s how the day it goes:

First park and meet at Glade Road Growing, 2351 Glade Road at 11 am.

We’ll then walk together to Heritage Park for a quick overview on what invasive garlic mustard is, why it’s important to remove it and how. Participants will learn how to spot and remove garlic mustard and other invasive plants and then go for a garlic mustard gather within the park. Please bring gloves and a harvest container (like a bucket or grocery bag) to use during the program. The family that pulls the most garlic mustard gets a prize.

After Heritage Park, we’ll head back to Glade Road Growing across the street with our garlic mustard bounty for a food prep demonstration and tasting. Recipes and tastings provided and all the garlic mustard you can pull to take home and prepare/cook for yourself.

This event will occur rain or shine.
