Kids on the Farm is a unique series of workshops that offer:

  • Hands-on education for kids that engages all the senses
  • Opportunity to connect with nature- inspiring curiosity and wonder
  • Exposure to and participation in planting, growing, harvesting and preparing food
  • Freedom to explore and play on the farm
  • Practical skill-building that boosts confidence

From seed starting to harvesting, garden art to feeding the animals, this fun and interactive series gets your kids up close and personal with local food production. This series is geared towards kids ages 6-12.

Supplies provided for each workshop. If your child has any dietary or medical restrictions, please indicate on the “order notes” section at checkout. Please dress appropriately for the weather and be ready to play in the dirt!

All workshops held at Glade Road Growing. Registration required. Registration for each workshop closes on the prior Wednesday. You will be emailed a liability waiver and media release prior to the workshop.

This workshop will be held primarily outdoors. Please bring a mask for instances indoors ( bathroom). Participants will be asked to wear their mask when within 3 ft of each other.

Saturday, September 11th,  10 am – 12 pm: Poultry, Poetry Everywhere

Ducks Among Us! Join us to explore Poultry and Poetry here on the Farm. We will be learning chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Children will be able to hold a duck or chicken and we will be honoring their amazing contribution to our kitchens: EGGS!

Saturday, October 9th,  10 am – 12 pm: Pregame Super Hero Seed Savers Style

Join us as we become super hero’s ready to save the world! One Seed at a time. Seed Saving is a time  honored cultural tradition. We will explore the many seed saving options and techniques available on the farm. Children will take home seeds.


About your workshop leader

Scarlett Williams- New River Valley Native, Scarlett Williams loves kids and digging in the dirt. Scarlett has twenty plus years of experience working with children as an Outdoor Educator, Science Teacher, Elementary School Counselor, and  currently as a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice in Blacksburg. Scarlett has earned National Board Certification as a School Counselor.. Partnering children and families with their local farmers is one of her passions. In 2006 Scarlett partnered her elementary school with a local organic farm as a drop off site. She loves ideas and strategies that help children to “be their best.”
